A Filigree Silver Vajra on Its Own Lotus Pedestal
This Silver Vajra with Stand pairs a hand-worked silver dorje with a matching copper pedestal, so the vajra can rest raised and honored on the altar between practice sessions. The vajra is wrapped in fine silver filigree and set with semiprecious turquoise and coral, while the stand repeats the same filigree work and adds lapis lazuli to its stones.
Resting on its pedestal, the set stands 3.5 inches tall and measures 6.5 inches across the vajra, a comfortable size for a home altar, personal shrine or meditation table. It is handcrafted by artisans in Nepal, and the close detail of its wirework and stone setting rewards a careful look.
Silver Vajra and Filigree Craftsmanship
At the heart of the vajra is a polished silver sphere, smooth and mirror-bright, held between two rings of raised lotus petals. From each side, five prongs open outward and curve back in to meet at a pointed silver tip, giving the dorje its classic balanced shape.
The prongs are where the filigree work shows most clearly. Fine silver wire has been twisted, coiled and soldered by hand into scrolls and spirals that run along each prong. Teardrop turquoise cabochons sit at the base of the prongs, and small coral and turquoise stones are set among the scrolls, each placed by hand. The polished sphere and tips catch the light, while the textured wirework around them gives the piece depth.
The Copper Lotus Pedestal
The stand is a stepped, rectangular copper pedestal made to cradle the vajra at its center. Two copper supports rise from its top panel and hold the vajra securely, while still letting it lift away easily when it is needed for practice.
The top of the pedestal carries filigree in the same style as the vajra, scattered with coral and turquoise and framed by a neat row of alternating stones. Around its sides runs a border of lotus petals, each petal set with coral, turquoise or deep blue lapis lazuli, and a beaded copper rim finishes the base. The warm tone of the copper sets off the silver above it, and the shared stones make the two pieces feel like one work.
The Symbolism of the Vajra
The vajra, called dorje in Tibetan, is one of the central symbols of Vajrayana Buddhism. Its name joins the ideas of a diamond and a thunderbolt: something that cannot be broken and something with irresistible force. It stands for the awakened mind, clear and indestructible, and for skillful means, the compassionate action that puts wisdom to work.
The vajra is traditionally paired with the ritual bell, which represents wisdom. Held together, the two express the union of wisdom and compassion. The lotus that frames the vajra’s center, and the lotus border of this stand, call to mind purity rising from ordinary conditions. Different teachers and traditions explain these meanings in their own ways, and no particular spiritual result is implied by owning or displaying this piece.
A Tradition of Himalayan Silverwork
Filigree and stone setting have been practiced in the Kathmandu Valley for many generations, and Nepalese artisans have long made ritual objects for Himalayan Buddhist communities. This vajra and stand are made by our artisans using these traditional hand methods. No specific workshop or lineage is claimed for the piece. What it carries is the craft itself, kept alive through steady practice and passed from experienced hands to newer ones.
Use in Vajrayana Practice
During practice, the vajra is held in the right hand, usually with the bell in the left, and it appears in many rituals, recitations and offerings. When the session ends, a stand like this one keeps the vajra raised, clean and in its proper place on the shrine, rather than resting directly on the altar surface or being put away. How the vajra is used depends on your lineage and the instructions you have received, so your own teacher is the best guide. The set is equally welcome as a piece of sacred art, kept with respect on an altar or in a collection.
Altar, Shrine and Display Settings
This silver vajra with stand sits well at the center of a home altar, on a small shrine, beside a meditation cushion or on a display shelf. It can stand alone or alongside statues, offering bowls, a ritual bell and other altar items. Keep it in a clean, raised and dry place. When moving it, lift the vajra by its central sphere and the stand by its base, rather than gripping the filigree prongs. To clean it, use a soft, dry cloth, and avoid water, perfume and chemical cleaners, which can tarnish the metal and loosen or dull the stones. Its place on the altar is aesthetic and cultural, and it does not produce spiritual energy or guaranteed protective effects.
