A Silver Double Vajra Built Around Four Directions
This Silver Double Vajra is a striking ritual piece, ideal for any Buddhist shrine, altar, or meditation space. Also known as the Vishwa Vajra or Double Dorje, it is formed by two vajras crossing at a central polished point, with four vajra heads extending outward in the four cardinal directions.
Beautifully crafted in silver, the vajra features intricate filigree work and is adorned with semiprecious coral and turquoise stones along its prongs and decorative scrollwork. It rests upon an elegant copper lotus stand, embellished with semiprecious coral, turquoise, and lapis lazuli stones, bringing together a harmonious combination of traditional craftsmanship and natural beauty.
Standing 12.5 inches tall, including the stand, this exquisite piece is handcrafted by skilled artisans in Nepal. Its intricate details and delicate silver filigree reflect the patience, precision, and exceptional craftsmanship involved in its creation.
Silver Double Vajra and Craftsmanship
At the heart of the piece sits a smooth, mirror-polished silver sphere. From it, four arms extend outward, each opening through a lotus-petal collar into a vajra head. Every head has a central prong surrounded by four curved outer prongs, which meet at a pointed silver tip. The outer prongs are filled with open filigree, a lacework of fine silver wire, and are bordered with small beaded lines.
Turquoise inlay runs along the spine of each outer prong. Teardrop turquoise stones sit within curling scroll motifs, and red coral and small turquoise beads are set at intervals between them. The contrast between bright polished silver, softer brushed surfaces and the colored stones gives the vajra depth from every angle.
The copper stand is shaped as a rounded lotus base. Its outer band is lined with lotus petals set alternately with coral, turquoise and lapis lazuli. A filigree field and rows of small coral and turquoise beads surround the top, where the lower vajra head is seated.
The Meaning of the Double Vajra
The single vajra, or dorje, represents the indestructible, unchanging nature of awakened mind. When two vajras are joined in a cross, the form is known in Sanskrit as the vishvavajra and in Tibetan as the natsok dorje. Its four heads reach toward the four directions from one center, and the form is often associated with stability, firm foundation and the all-accomplishing activity linked with Amoghasiddhi, one of the Five Wisdom Buddhas.
In many Himalayan traditions, the double vajra is drawn or placed at the base of a mandala, and it is laid at the foundation of stupas, temples and statues when they are consecrated. Understandings of its meaning vary between schools and teachers, and no specific spiritual outcome is implied by owning or displaying this piece.
The Artistic Heritage of Nepal
The Kathmandu Valley has long been a center of Himalayan metal arts, and silver filigree and stone setting are among the most demanding of its crafts. This double vajra is made by our artisans using these hand-worked techniques. No specific workshop or lineage is claimed for the piece. The skill it shows is passed from experienced craftspeople to those who learn alongside them.
Role in Vajrayana Religious Practice
The double vajra appears in ritual as a symbol of a stable, protected foundation. It is used in consecration and mandala practice, and it is often kept on a shrine. How it is used depends on the tradition and the teachings a practitioner has received, so we suggest asking your own teacher for guidance. Many people also keep it as a piece of sacred art. Both are respectful ways to engage with it.
Altar, Shrine and Display Settings
This piece suits a Buddhist altar, a home shrine, a meditation room or a collection of Himalayan art. Its stand lets it sit upright and steady, so it can be displayed on its own as a central piece. Place it in a clean, raised position away from damp. Lift it by the central sphere or the stand rather than by the prongs. To clean it, wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, perfume and chemical polish, which can dull the silver and affect the stones. Its place in these settings is aesthetic and cultural, and it does not create spiritual energy or guaranteed protective effects.
