This Tibetan Buddhist Thangka features the revered goddess Green Tara, known for swift compassion and protection. She is depicted seated in her classic meditation posture on a lotus-based throne atop a peaceful hill. Her graceful form is adorned in flowing robes, rendered with intricate patterns and sacred symbolism. Her right hand is extended in Varada Mudra, symbolizing her boundless generosity and blessings for all sentient beings. In this hand, she also holds a beautifully blooming blue lotus flower, known as Utpala, which rises gracefully, symbolizing purity and awakened nature.
Her left hand is in Abhaya Mudra, offering protection from fear, danger, and suffering. She also holds the stem of another Utpala lotus in this hand. The lotus displays three symbolic blossoms: one open, representing the present moment; a bud, symbolizing the future yet to unfold; and a wilted bloom, reflecting the past. Together, these stages embody Green Tara’s timeless compassion that transcends all boundaries of time and space. The combination of her hand gestures and symbolic flowers expresses her unwavering commitment to guide and liberate all beings.
Above the central figure, in the top right, appear rainbow light rays, the moon, and stars. To the top left, the radiant sun shines over gentle clouds, offering harmony and cosmic balance. The background is filled with serene elements — sacred pond, floating clouds, gentle hills, and sacred trees — creating a divine and meditative environment around her.
At the bottom center of the painting are traditional offerings placed as a tribute to Green Tara. These offerings represent the five senses: a mirror for sight, conch shell and elephant tusks for sound, perfumes and incense for smell, fruits for taste, and silk cloth for touch. They rest before blooming lotuses and clouds below her throne, adding depth and symbolic richness.
